"[…] This Taiwanese man has decided, in Paris, to revitalise the Chinese dramatic language. Unlike some of his compatriots who stage some American-Chinese-Classical mixed salads, Yuan Shang Lin stands far from standards. […] The walks, a basis for this solo, are rooted in the earth. They emancipate through acrobatic leaps without any take off or grow languid during floor dances. All through the performance, Yuan Shang Lin invents other bodies for himself, older, more feminine, more animal in turns. His face changes, from soft, when his eyes are closed, to anxious when the dancer is exploring space, or pleasant when he smiles at the back of the stage. A kind of contemporary Peking Opera. And as the dancer is far from being resourceless, we travel with him outside beaten tracks". |
