EOLIPILE
From Aeolus, god of the wind, and pila (ball).
Metal sphere full of water. The water, when heated, gets out of two holes and gets the ball to spin.
This system was invented by Héron, a mathematician who lived in Alexandria in the 2nd century B.C., about twenty centuries before the steam-engine was devised.
